Level 3, year two sport and exercise science students, have recently participated in a two week work experience placement at The Gym, Reading.
Students were required to carry out a variety of duties including, shadowing a personal trainer, leading group activities under supervision, general housekeeping and promotional activities.
Teacher Aimee Kaur, said: "The work experience placement has prepared students for working in the industry something of which we aim to do in college to ensure there is a smooth transition from education to employment. Students have been given the opportunity to work alongside exercise professionals and gain familiarity with the industry expectations."
Nadine Durkin-McDonnell, a sport and exercise science student, said: "I had a really good experience at The Gym. It has helped me to know what I need for the future in terms of professional conduct and career progression. The staff was really welcoming and approachable. I learnt how sessions are run and what happens behind the scenes such as the logistics which go into the safe running of a gym.
"I have learnt so many skills whilst being on placement and I believe these are transferable in any form of education or employment. I had a positive experience at The Gym and would consider this as a potential career and my mind is set on going to university to further my studies first."
Sarah Leonard, General Manager, The Gym Reading Central, said: “The students from Reading College completed a two week placement at The Gym Reading Central. During this time they had a glimpse of the inner workings of running a Gym and Personal Training. Although the tasks are not glamorous at times, the students worked to the best of their ability and always were polite and enthusiastic.
"They were eager to learn from management and the trainers and were a credit to themselves and the college. We would welcome them back any time”
