If you want to work in early years, our pathways provide you with a clear route into this rewarding industry.

Our programmes combine theoretical study in college with significant practical experience, preparing you to work competently, safely and effectively with children and their families in a wide range of settings.

Our students really enjoy the ongoing work experience offered in a variety of settings for two days per week, building up to 650 hours of experience every year. This is a key feature that future employers will be looking for.

During placements, you will gain the confidence to plan and evaluate activities and gain excellent observation skills. Throughout your programme you will also get opportunities to go on trips, follow projects set by employers and take part in employability event,s such as mock interviews, job search and CV writing sessions.

If you want to play your part in a child’s future, a career in education could be the right choice for you. Help a child grow and learn, developing vital social, and communication and play skills and more, and enjoy a career where no two days are the same. We will prepare you for careers such as:

  • early years assistant
  • pre-school/ nursery foundation/ SEN assistant
  • nanny/ home-based child carer.

We offer childcare programmes from Level 1 (equivalent to GCSEs grades D-F or 3-1) to Level 3 diploma (equivalent to A-levels). 


Our facilities mirror those that you will find in the workplace. You will learn in a childcare suite, a realistic nursery environment where students can develop practical skills and techniques. The suite boasts a story time area and a play and discovery space, so that you'll get the opportunity to practice your skills in a realistic working environment. This means you will be more confident when you progress to employment.

Industry partnerships

We work in partnership with employers to develop learning programmes that meet the needs of the industry. For example, The Co-operative Childcare sponsor the childcare suite, helping students gain the skills needed for a successful career in childcare. Visiting speakers have taken part in masterclasses to tell students about their experience in the industry and what their roles involve, etc. 

As a childcare student you will take part in work placements, helping you build up to 650 hours of invaluable work experience every year.
