Shavira Carmel Fernandes is studying a business pathway at Reading College.
As part of her programme, she completed two weeks of work experience at NatWest, where she learnt about business banking, including how to provide financial health checks and how to advise companies on growing their business.
She is planning to continue studying business at Activate Learning at Level 3, with the view of going into an apprenticeship.
Shavira says: “Reading College is a brilliant college which leads you to success. My faculty manager is brilliant, and all the teachers are really good. We are treated as adults here, and I feel really comfortable talking to my teachers.”
“The career team are also really helpful; they’ve told me what I needed to do and what might be good for me. They’re brilliant. My careers advisor recently suggested that I join the Student Crew (when learners are paid to work part-time within the college) so that I can learn about business administration in the college itself, so I hope to be working here in the summer contacting new students.
Shavira says that the summer position will be good work experience in business administration, but that she also works at a sports retailer while studying. She explains that: “My manager is flexible with my hours if I need more time for my studies, so I can do both.”
