Jade Kirby dreams of a career in nursing, and has recently retaken the Maths GCSE she needs to realise her ambitions while studying a Health and Social Care programme at Reading College.
Jade’s work placement is at the Royal Berkshire Hospital. The partnership between RBC and Reading College is unique to the further education sector, and enables Health and Social Care students to gain valuable workplace skills with weekly visits to the hospital during the academic year.
Although she admits that it has been hard at times, Jade says that she has enjoyed her studies, and says:
“I chose Reading College because A Levels didn’t appeal to me. I’m studying for maths and English GCSEs at the same time, and it’s been a struggle, but I’ve enjoyed the course. A highlight has been the work placement at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, where I’ve learnt about infection control, radiography and audiology. I gave my classmates an ear test and witnessed a patient hearing examination.
“The teachers are incredibly supportive. My study support worker has been amazing. She points out my mistakes, but encourages me to fix them for myself.”
