Head of Campus - Student Experience at Bracknell and Wokingham College

A warm welcome to our second Head of Campus - Student Experience update.

Over the last two weeks, we launched our student Christmas Shoebox Appeal for those young people on our campus who may be experiencing financial hardship. I have been truly humbled by the generosity of our staff and students who have donated a vast array of stationery, clothing, toiletries, games, accessories, make up, hair products, sweets, chocolates and many, many more Christmas items. Thank you!

We have launched a new free eBook and audiobook service called BorrowBox. Students can now borrow eBooks and audiobooks. All they need to do is register, download the app and select ‘Activate Learning Group’, sign in with their Activate Learning log on and they can start downloading, reading and listening.

Practical lessons are very much in full flow now, despite the challenges faced due to Covid-19 restrictions. Highlights for me have been seeing our basketball and football academies working on their fitness and skills while competitive games have been postponed. Protective service students have also been working hard on their fitness and practical skills and our Hairdressing students have been practising their skills, eagerly awaiting the Harmony Salon to reopen to customers again.

I want to remind parents and students that the the UCAS deadline is fast approaching on 15 January 2021. Our Careers team is still offering 15-minute sessions to review personal statements before submission.

On Friday 4 December we are getting in the Christmas spirit raising money for Alzheimer’s by participating in Elf day. Staff and students will be dressing up in Elf costumes and donating to a worthy charity. On Friday 11 December we will be participating in Christmas Jumper Day, again raising money for a worthy cause, Save the Children.

This will be the last update of 2020 but I will return in 2021 to keep you up-to-date with what is happening at Bracknell and Wokingham College. It is fair to say that 2020 promised to be an interesting year but I do not think anyone could have predicted quite what happened. It has been a challenging year for our students and staff but the resilience, perseverance and ‘can do’ attitude from everyone have shown that, whatever challenges we are faced with, we can overcome them.

On behalf of everyone at Bracknell and Wokingham College and Activate Learning, I would like to wish you all a safe and happy festive period and I look forward to seeing you in 2021.

COVID-19 update

We are changing the way that we inform you about COVID-19 cases on campus as we recognise that people might want to be able to access the information for themselves, rather than relying on us sending the information to you. We will now be updating our COVID-19 pages to show you the total number of cases by campus and the number of cases in the past week, broken down by staff and student.
