Oxford Bus Company to launch dedicated term-time bus route for college students in Blackbird Leys

Oxford Bus Company has partnered with Activate Learning to launch a new term-time bus service from September 2022.

The dedicated 5X bus route will serve students, staff and the public and will operate from Oxford Railway Station to the City of Oxford College Technology Campus in Blackbird Leys.

The route will run on Mondays to Fridays during term time and will offer a fast and direct service each morning and evening, departing from Oxford Railway Station, before stopping at Redbridge Park and Ride and the Technology Campus.

A new dedicated bus route for students

Phil Southall, Managing Director of Oxford Bus Company, said: “We are proud to be working with Activate Learning to provide a tailored service to ensure its students and staff can travel to and from its Technology Campus in Blackbird Leys during term time.

“The new 5X service provides a fast and direct link between Oxford station, the city centre and the Technology Campus and demonstrates what can be achieved when private companies and bus operators work together.”

The new service will cost £2.50 single and £4 return. Season tickets will also be available, allowing for wider usage of Oxford Bus Company, Thames Travel and Stagecoach services.

The 5X bus route will be promoted at the City of Oxford College Open Event on 2 March from 4 – 7pm.

Visitors at the Open Event can speak with Oxford Bus Company and learn more about the 5X service, as well as the programmes on offer at the Technology Campus, which will also be home to the new South-Central Institute of Technology (IOT) hub from September 2022.

John Kelly, Director of Delivery – Technology at Activate Learning, said: “This new service will allow us to support more students from Banbury and Bicester and other neighbouring towns with a direct service from the train station to the campus. It will also incorporate prospective learners from Abingdon who can get the bus from Redbridge Park and Ride.

“This is a great opportunity to promote our wide variety of further education, apprenticeship and higher education programmes at the Technology Campus, as well as our new Institute of Technology (IOT) opportunities.”
