Activate Learning is celebrating an outstanding national achievement after Francis Avizius, a former Horticulture Operative Apprentice at Merrist Wood College and University Centre, was named Landscape and Horticulture Apprentice of the Year at the Land-Based & Environment Learner Awards 2025.
The ceremony, held at the National Conference Centre in Solihull on 27 November, brought together learners, educators, employers and industry leaders from across the UK to recognise excellence in the land-based and environment sectors. Delivered in partnership by Landex and Lantra, the event was hosted by acclaimed wildlife presenter and farmer, Kate Humble.

Francis, who completed his Horticulture Operative Level 2 Apprenticeship with Activate Apprenticeships and Wonder Gardens Ltd last academic year, was recognised by judges for his exceptional dedication, professionalism, and commitment to horticulture.
The judging panel said: “This apprentice has excelled as a dedicated horticulturist and mentor, demonstrating professionalism, curiosity and strong communication skills whilst serving as an inspiring role model for peers.”
Speaking after receiving his award, Francis said: “I’m so surprised! I’m really proud and really grateful to have attended this event and won this award.”

Francis attended the awards evening with his employer, Hanka Kohlertova, owner of Wonder Gardens Ltd, who supported him throughout his apprenticeship and continues to employ him. His father also joined the celebrations, along with Merrist Wood College and University Centre staff members, Richard Cant (Curriculum Manager), Kim Thornborough (Performance Coach), and Helen Finch (Horticulture Teacher).
Hanka spoke warmly about Francis’ impact on her business, she said: “He has been amazing. He helps drive the company because he turns up every day, works very hard, tries to do his best, and he’s very keen on learning and improving. He’s just amazing – we’re very lucky to have him.”
She added that the award has already boosted Francis’ confidence: “It gives him lots of confidence… to take every opportunity, not be scared or shy or worried, and just throw himself even more into learning.”
Hanka also highlighted how the award shines a positive light on Wonder Gardens Ltd: “For our reputation, definitely – it shows the high calibre of employees we have, the skills, the knowledge, and the dedication.”

The Land-Based & Environment Learner Awards, sponsored in Francis’ category by the National Trust, showcase the achievements of exceptional individuals across agriculture, environmental management, horticulture, arboriculture, and related fields. The awards reflect the sector’s commitment to developing skilled, passionate professionals who will drive the future of land-based industries.
Staff from Merrist Wood College and University Centre and Activate Apprenticeships praised Francis for his dedication throughout his apprenticeship and his continued success in the workplace. His award highlights the college’s longstanding reputation for excellence in land-based education and its strong partnerships with employers across the sector.
Richard Cant, Curriculum Manager at Merrist Wood College and University Centre, said: “Francis’ achievement is a testament to his dedication and the hard work he has put into his apprenticeship.
“We are incredibly proud of the horticulturist he is becoming, and this national recognition is thoroughly deserved.”
