The Learning Philosophy

Learn more about the three elements that are at the heart of our teaching and learning practice.

Feel safe. Find purpose. Make progress.

At Activate Learning, our award-winning Learning Philosophy is at the heart of how we teach, support our learners and work together across our eight colleges.

Built on research into how people learn, it brings together three essential elements: emotion, motivation and the brain. It is a powerful teaching and learning approach, but it is also much more than that. It shapes our culture, influences the environments we create and guides how we help every learner build the knowledge, skills and confidence to succeed.

Learning works best when three things come together

At Activate Learning, we believe everyone can make progress.

Our Learning Philosophy helps us create learning experiences where you feel supported, understand why your learning matters and are given the opportunity to develop and succeed.

It is built around three simple ideas: emotion helps you feel safe, motivation helps you find purpose and an understanding of how the brain learns helps you make progress.

When these three elements work together, learning becomes more meaningful, engaging and effective.

Emotion Feel safe

You learn best when you feel welcome, respected and able to be yourself.

Feeling safe does not mean that learning will always feel easy. Learning should sometimes challenge you and take you beyond what you already know. Feeling safe means knowing that you can ask questions, try something new and make mistakes without feeling judged.

We will work with you to create an environment where everyone is valued, included, supported and treated with respect. Our staff will listen to you and take your concerns seriously. You will be given clear expectations and consistent support, while being encouraged to ask questions, share your ideas and take an active part in your learning.

When something is affecting your ability to learn, we will help you access the support you need. We will also treat mistakes as a natural and valuable part of learning, rather than something to fear.

When you feel safe, you are more likely to take part, challenge yourself and grow in confidence.

Motivation Find purpose

You are more motivated when you understand why your learning matters.

Learning becomes more worthwhile when it connects with your goals, interests, experiences and plans for the future. We will help you understand how the knowledge and skills you are developing can make a difference to your next steps, your future career and your life beyond college.

Your learning will connect with real life and the world of work, and your teachers will explain why particular topics and activities are important. You will have opportunities to explore your interests and ambitions, set goals that are relevant to you and make choices that help you take greater ownership of your learning.

We will also encourage you to recognise your strengths, consider what you could achieve and develop the ambition to keep moving forward.

When you find purpose in your learning, you are more likely to stay engaged, keep going when things are difficult and aim high.

Brain Make progress

Your brain develops through practice, challenge and feedback.

Learning is not about getting everything right the first time. Your brain builds stronger connections when you practise, revisit ideas, solve problems and use feedback to improve.

We will help you understand what you are learning, recognise how far you have come and know what you need to do next. Learning will be broken down into clear, manageable steps, with regular opportunities to practise and apply your knowledge and skills.

You will receive constructive feedback that helps you improve, alongside support and challenge that reflects your individual needs. You will also have time to reflect, revisit your learning and try again, as well as opportunities to recognise and celebrate the progress you have made.

As you continue to practise and respond to feedback, your knowledge, skills, independence and confidence will grow.

What does the Learning Philosophy look like in practice?

Our Learning Philosophy shapes your whole experience at Activate Learning, not only what happens during lessons.

You should see it in the way our staff welcome, respect and support you, as well as in how your learning is planned and delivered. It influences the feedback and guidance you receive, the support available when you face difficulties and the opportunities you have to explore careers and future pathways.

It also shapes the way we listen to your views, involve you in your learning and help you become more confident and independent.

Your part in the Learning Philosophy

Learning is something we create together.

You can support your own progress by taking part, asking for help when you need it and being willing to try new things. Treating others with respect helps create an environment where everyone can feel safe and learn.

You can also make your learning more meaningful by connecting it with your goals, practising what you have learned and reflecting on the feedback you receive. Mistakes and challenges are not signs that you cannot succeed. They are part of the process of improving.

You do not need to have everything worked out. We will work with you and help you take your next step.

Our commitment to you
