New Sensory Gym Transforms Student Experience at Merrist Wood

Activate Learning is delighted to announce the opening of a brand-new outdoor sensory gym at the Woodlands Centre, Merrist Wood College. The project was made possible thanks to a £10,000 funding award from Guildford Philanthropy, a local initiative supporting the local community.

The state-of-the-art outdoor gym is the first of its kind across Activate Learning sites. It has been specially designed to support learners with learning difficulties and disabilities (LLDD), providing a safe, accessible, and supportive environment for physical engagement, emotional regulation, and overall wellbeing.

The facility incorporates a variety of specialist equipment and multi-sensory experiences that can be used for structured therapy, unstructured play, or as a calming space. Since its installation, the gym has already become an integral part of daily routines for students, bringing visible improvements in engagement, development, and confidence.

Guildford Philanthropy, which was conceived by Guildford Borough Council and the Community Foundation for Surrey, helps fund local projects that create lasting social impact. Their generous award has allowed Activate Learning’s Lifeskills Faculty to realise its vision for this unique facility, which will also enhance the organisation’s physiotherapy, mental health, and wellness offer for students.

Gareth Ellis, Curriculum Manager of the Lifeskills Faculty, said:

“We are incredibly proud to open this sensory gym at our flagship LLDD centre. It is already making a huge difference to our learners, offering them a space where they can feel safe, supported, and able to thrive. The gym is not only a valuable addition to our curriculum but also a powerful tool in supporting emotional regulation and wellbeing. We are extremely grateful to Guildford Philanthropy for their support in making this vision a reality.”

The sensory gym will support LLDD students, giving them the chance to take part in vital physical activity as part of their curriculum, while also strengthening Activate Learning’s ability to meet the needs of future students.

This new facility represents an important milestone in Activate Learning’s ongoing commitment to creating inclusive, life-changing opportunities for learners.
