Merrist Wood College Student Wins Prestigious National Arboriculture Award

Activate Learning is delighted to celebrate the success of Merrist Wood College student Harry Hudson, who has been named the Arboricultural Association’s Best Student of the Year 2025.

Harry, who studied the BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Forestry and Arboriculture, was nominated for the award by his tutor, Lewis Hanson, in recognition of his exceptional dedication to both the academic and practical elements of his course.

A standout student

In his nomination, Lewis praised Harry’s natural aptitude and strong practical skills, highlighting his maturity and ability to apply knowledge effectively in real-world settings. Academically, Harry also excelled, consistently producing high-quality assignments and earning distinctions during his time with the college.

Harry’s achievements include gaining his chainsaw use from a rope and harness qualification and being nominated for Merrist Wood College’s own Arboriculture Student of the Year award for two consecutive years.

Lewis commented:

“Harry’s commitment, enthusiasm, and work ethic set him apart. He is not only an outstanding student but also a valued member of our college community, always volunteering his time to support events and acting as an excellent ambassador for both the college and the arboriculture industry. I have no doubt he will make a lasting contribution to the sector.”

Industry recognition

Alongside his studies, Harry worked with Moore’s Tree Company, where he completed his work experience before securing part-time work. His commitment and skills quickly impressed the team, leading to a pay rise and the offer of full-time employment upon completion of his course—a role he has now taken up.
