As the summer break approaches, we’d like to say a big thank you to all our students for your hard work this term, and to parents and carers for your continued support.
We hope you enjoy the holidays, take time to relax, and recharge – but we also want to remind you how important it is to look after your safety and wellbeing.
Whether you’re travelling, chilling at home, or heading to festivals or events, here are some practical tips to help you stay safe and well.
Out and About – Stay Safe, Stay Aware:
- Keep your phone charged and location services on, especially when going somewhere new.
- Use trusted taxi services or pre-booked rides – always check the driver and vehicle match your booking.
- Know how to get help: Call 999 in an emergency. Report non-emergency crime via 101 or anonymously
- Heading to a festival? Check out Festival Safe for loads of helpful info.
- If someone is making you feel uncomfortable in a bar, pub or club, ask staff for “Angela”. They’ll discreetly help you leave or call a taxi – no fuss, no judgment.
Water Safety: Stay Cool, Stay Safe
Tempted by a swim outdoors? Stay safe by remembering:
- Check the water – is it too deep, too shallow, or fast flowing? Are there any hidden dangers?
- Enter slowly – never jump from heights.
- Stay close to the edge and within your depth.
- Always swim with someone and look for lifeguards if at the coast.
- Avoid swimming if you’ve been drinking or using drugs.
- If you get into trouble: float on your back and call for help.
- Emergency? Call 999 and ask for Fire and Rescue (inland) or Coastguard (coastal).
Looking After Your Wellbeing
Summer is a great time to unwind, but looking after your mental and physical health is just as important:
- Get outside: walks, sports, or even sitting in the sunshine can boost your mood.
- Keep a routine: it helps you stay balanced and motivated.

Thinking about Alcohol or Drugs?
Most young people don’t use alcohol or illegal drugs, but if you choose to, know the risks:
- Pace yourself – alternate alcoholic drinks with water or soft drinks.
- Never leave your drink unattended or accept drinks from strangers – they could be spiked.
- Illegal drugs are unpredictable – you can’t be sure what’s in them or how strong they are. Make sure you have someone you can trust and rely on, if you or a friend needs help, keep safe and aware of your surroundings.
- Avoid mixing drugs, alcohol, and prescription medication – it can be dangerous.
- Never drive under the influence or get into a car with someone who has.
- Always be honest with medical staff if you or a friend needs help – it could save a life. Call 999 if you or someone else needs urgent help.

Thinking about sex? Know Your Rights and Stay Safe
- Consent is everything – both people need to agree and feel safe. Do not feel pressured to do something you don’t want to do, and remember, you can change your mind at any point.
- Practise safe sex – use a condom to protect against sexually transmitted infections or unplanned pregnancy.
- If something happens without your consent, you are not to blame. Speak to a trusted adult or contact: Sexual Assault Referral Centre or Rape Crisis.
Feeling Low, Anxious, or Lonely?
Not everyone enjoys the long summer break – and that’s okay. If you’re struggling:
- Keep a routine – get up, get dressed, and eat regularly.
- Plan activities, even small ones, to give your days structure.
- Reach out – your friends may be feeling the same.
- Try something new – a hobby, volunteering, or just exploring somewhere local.
- Need someone to talk to? Call Samaritans on 116 123.
Staying Safe Online
You might spend more time online this summer – here’s how to protect yourself:
- Check your privacy settings – don’t overshare, especially when you’re away.
- Report anything harmful, abusive, or illegal. Check out more information about social media safety on our Online Safety Hub.
- Never share personal or bank details without verifying who you’re speaking to.
- Communicate only with people you know in real life.
- If it seems too good to be true – it probably is! Check out more information about online scams in our Online Safety Hub.

Summer Jobs – Know Your Rights
A summer job is a great opportunity, but stay alert to anything that seems off:
- Make sure there’s a clear job description and written contract.
- Avoid cash-in-hand roles with no details about hours, pay or duties.
- Be cautious of jobs offering high pay for very little work or asking for personal details or upfront fees.
- Know your rights as a young worker – you are entitled to rest breaks, safe working conditions and fair pay.
- Never agree to work in unsafe or uncomfortable situations – trust your instincts.
