13 October 2020

Reading College is excited to announce the launch of a new course in Esports.

The new Esports, Enterprise and Entrepreneurship Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma will equip students with the skills to progress into the business of competitive gaming, coaching and event management.

The course will involve an introduction to Esports and how it began in competitive online gaming. It will encourage learners to explore all areas of the industry including entrepreneurship, health, wellbeing and fitness for Esports players and events management. Learners will also be able to specialise in other modules including shout-casting, branding, video production and games design.

Nancy Buckley, Director of Career Pathways for the Lifestyles faculty at Activate Learning, said: “We are really excited to launch an innovative new programme at Reading College which has been designed by the British Esports Association and Pearson.

“The course will introduce learners to the rapidly growing industry of Esports and equip them with the knowledge and skills they need to start a successful career within this rewarding and fast-paced industry.”

The two-year qualification, which is equivalent to three A Levels, will be available to study at the King’s Road campus from September 2021.

On completion of the course, learners can progress into higher education or pursue a career as a competitive player, coach or promoter.

Esports is a rapidly growing industry with events watched online and attended by millions of viewers. The popularity of Esports has increased during the coronavirus pandemic as fans cannot attend sports fixtures due to the requirement for social distancing. Recent examples include Premier League players participating in competitive FIFA tournaments and F1 drivers regularly streaming iRacing on Twitch.

Designed with the British Esports Association and Endpoint Esports Ltd, Reading College will be creating a bespoke gaming room with state-of-the-art equipment for playing, analysing and shout-casting.

Gary Tibbett, Education Manager, British Esports Association will be available to answer questions about the new course at Reading College’s Virtual Open Event on Wednesday 14 October from 4-8pm, to attend please register here.
