Final guidance on how your BTEC qualification will be awarded this year

29 May 2020

We have received final guidance from Pearson around how vocational and technical qualifications are going to be awarded and wanted to share this with you so that you are aware.

Pearson, which is the awarding body for BTEC qualifications, has now published how it plans to calculate and award internal assessment grades.

This information applies to students studying Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 (Year 1 or 2) BTEC programmes.
This guidance sets out what work will be included in the assessment, which will help to form the final grade you are awarded. Or if you are a continuing BTEC learner, the award of units that have been impacted during the lockdown period.

What will happen if I am due to finish at college this year?

If you are due to finish college this year, your online learning will have now stopped and evidence for your final grade will be gathered.

Please note, your teachers are still on hand to offer guidance regarding your progress to your next level of learning, university, or the workplace. They cannot discuss your awarded grades.

What if I still have another year of college to complete?

If you are progressing to your final year next year, you online learning will continue as normal to timetable to ensure you are well prepared.

You may be invited to college to continue your studies onsite before the end of the academic year. If this is the case, your teachers will be in touch to let you know.

How will my work be assessed and my qualification awarded?

Your teachers will spend the next few weeks assessing each student, to work out grades that are a fair and accurate reflection of what they believe you would have achieved had normal teaching and assessment not stopped due to lockdown.

This process is one they will take very seriously, and these predictions will be made with integrity.  Once they have made their predicted grades, these will be sent off for external moderation.

You can find more information about how your specific qualification will be assessed by using this tool.

Teachers will not issue further assignment briefs for Year 1 and 2 learners at Level 2 and 3 for the remainder of year. Teaching and learning will only continue for progressing learners to prepare them for next year.

If you have any questions, please speak to your teachers, but be advised they will not be able to discuss your grades with you as they will need to ensure the integrity of the process. These grades will be awarded on results day this summer.

In the meantime, stay smiling and keep safe,
