Plumbing students experience life on a construction site

Reading College Plumbing Level 2 Diploma students got to experience life on a construction site for the first time with a visit to Suttons Business Park this month.

Benniman Construction welcomed 15 students to Suttons Business Park on 10 October, starting the day off with a site induction.

Mark Lauri, plumbing lecturer at Activate Learning said: “The site visit provided our learners with a unique opportunity to see a working construction site firsthand. Students got to see the hazards and dangers that we discuss in the training room for real and experience what it is like to work on a commercial site and see tradespeople going about their working day.

“It helped answer many questions that we have covered, where the learners’ inexperience of construction sites may have been lacking.”

Encouraging students to work within construction

Terry Cowdrey, site manager at Suttons Business Park presented the induction, going through health and safety procedures for students who had not previously visited a construction site.

Terry detailed possible hazards on a construction site before taking the group on a tour with high-vis jackets and hard hats in tow.

Martyn Taylor, Director of Retail and Fit Out at Benniman Construction, said: “Benniman Ltd are committed to encouraging students to work within the construction industry. Where possible, we will always provide work experience, support and guidance to students.”

Students were also informed about what was happening on-site that day, the different trades that worked at Suttons Business Park and how Terry runs the area as site manager.

On finishing their tour, students also got the opportunity to take part in a question and answer session.

When asked about the visit, Sherrie Mills, a plumbing student at Reading College, said: “It was really good to learn about the workings of a construction site, and to find out about the different trades and professionals involved.

“I really enjoyed being able to see a real construction site in operation and not just learn about it in the classroom. It was really beneficial to my course and future career as a plumber.”

Benniman Construction has now offered a selection of students work experience at Suttons Business Park, allowing them to put their knowledge and practical skills to work.
