Free Saturday art and fashion clubs for 13-16-year olds thriving at colleges across the Thames Valley

02 May 2019

Young people are getting creative across the Thames Valley with a free initiative being run in partnership with Activate Learning to foster artistic talents and inspire those with a flair for fashion and business.

Activate Learning has been partnering with the National Saturday Club to provide free-to-join clubs for 13-16-year-olds who are keen to get into the world of art, fashion and business.

We currently facilitate the club at three of our college campus locations, including Banbury and Bicester College,City of Oxford College and Reading College.

The National Art and Design Saturday clubis available on campus in Banbury and Reading and theNational Fashion and Business Saturday Club is available in Oxford and Reading.

Members are encouraged to develop their skills in the creative arts and can use industry-standard equipment within our colleges.

Techniques explored include animation, ceramic, drawing, fashion, graphic design, painting, photography, printmaking, textiles and 3D design.

There are also opportunities for young people to network and take part in expert masterclasses and national events, enabling them to make new friends and grow their confidence.

In February, nine Saturday Art Clubs partnered with Tate Exchange for two masterclasses led by design collection, Scale Rule.

Over two Saturdays at the Tate Modern in London, Activate Learning club members were invited to collaborate with architects, designers and engineers via interactive masterclass sessions.

The clubs explored artwork from the Tate’s collection, creating sculptures from paper straws and paperclips, using the knowledge and skills taught by Scale Rule and the club.

For those who participate in the Saturday Art Club, their work will be showcased in a summer show and exhibitions annually in London. Each club plans its own section of the show.

The culmination of the year is a public exhibition of all club members’ work in the Embankment Galleries at London’s historic Somerset House which regularly receives over 3,000 visitors.

Students also get the chance to explore the capital’s world-renowned museums and galleries throughout the year.
