Year 2 Blackbird Leys brickwork apprentice, Kai Johnson, was a winner at the SkillBuild regional heat in Leicester at the end of last month. Kai beat off some very stiff competition in the regional qualifier for the new entrant bricklaying category.
It took Kai just under 5 hours to complete the competition task; to build a garden wall pier.
Kai said: "Competing is a great way to test yourself as everyone is watching you and your work. It was difficult because we had to use two different colours of brick and different finishes, and you had to keep your wits about you. I was pretty surprised when I won as I thought I'd made a couple of mistakes, but now I want to compete again next year in the advanced category."
SkillBuild, delivered by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), is the largest multi-trade competition in the UK for construction trainees and apprentices. As each level of competition progresses, competitors are tested not only on their technical abilities, but on their time management, character and commitment. The competition can also help them build their own confidence, self-esteem and life skills.
