Graham, Access to HE

After 25 years in construction, Graham was ready to take on a new challenge: studying humanities.

It’s never too late to make a change, as Graham Ralph found out after completing an Access to higher education pathway at City of Oxford College.

After 25 years in construction, Graham was ready to take on a new challenge. Inspired by his wife, who had completed a similar programme, Graham was offered a place at City of Oxford College in 2014 to study humanities.

Graham says: “College was such a positive experience. The teaching staff were fantastic, and everyone on the course helped and supported each other. We backed each other up when we still weren’t sure about what we were capable of achieving.”

Graham went on study at Oxford Brookes University, where he won the Judy Chance Prize for the best undergraduate dissertation in geography. His support for two fellow City of Oxford College students with disabilities was recognised in a university scholarship that partly financed his degree.

Looking back at where it all started, Graham describes his time at City of Oxford College as “life-changing.” He says: “The access course was great, with a wide breadth of topics that opened up to a world of knowledge.”
