Project-based learning

Project-based learning will help equip you with the skills, knowledge and attributes needed for success.

Through project-based learning, you will work with employers on industry-specific projects. This helps you build relevant skills, including teamwork and communication, and gain experience which prepares you for the workplace.

How does project-based learning work?

Reading train station redesign – set by Peter Brett Associates

Students worked with mentors from Peter Brett Associates to redesign the old part of Reading’s train station. The project encompassed all parts of the curriculum, from English and geography to science and IT. This was fully integrated into day-to-day lessons and learning experiences. During the project, teachers aligned their classes with the project’s objectives and tasks, and Peter Brett Associates hosted off-site project days.

Alternative use for a Westgate building - set by Laing O' Rourke

Level 3 Engineering students worked on this challenge set by Laing O' Rourke, developing plans for an alternative use for one of the new buildings in the Westgate development.

Three teams of students presented their pitches to a panel of judges, including mentors from the Laing O’Rourke Westgate Oxford Project team. The pitches included plans for a luxury sustainable hotel and spa, a gym and leisure centre sponsored by a leading sports retailer and a two-storey go karting centre (overall winners.)

Fundraising - Karcher Accumulator Challenge - set by Karcher

Level 3 Business students worked on this challenge set by Karcher, fundraising for the Katharine House Hospice. Each student team received £50 to fund entrepreneurial activities to make more money for the hospice. Students in Banbury, Oxford and Reading participated in this project. Every year, hundreds of pounds are raised for the hospice. 

IT consultancy - set by Waitrose

Reading College students shared their IT consultancy skills with the HQ of major supermarket chain Waitrose.

This was part of Waitrose's drive to offer excellent customer service. Staff presented the students with a real working challenge, focused on updating their ‘QuickCheck’ feature, which allows customers to scan as they shop in store.

Students designed new features for the QuickCheck system through the integration of personal mobile devices, apps and geo location tracking. The students also considered how to gather and use customer data, such as purchasing trends, to enhance customer experience. They pitched the results of their project to the IT, E-commerce and Business teams in Bracknell.
