Hands-on woodworking courses for budding designer/makers and keen DIY enthusiasts.

This hands-on woodworking course has been designed for budding designer/makers or keen DIY enthusiasts that would like to gain the skills necessary to create their own furniture, taught by Rycotewood alumnus Jered Allcock.

At the end of the course, you will take home your own, hand-made unique collector's cabinet with two glazed hinged doors for displaying prized artefacts or collections.

You'll have the option to augment the cabinet on later courses

Please note this course will not run during school holidays.

What I'll learn

You will learn about:

  • tools: their selection, use and care
  • timber identification and selection
  • basic cabinetmaking
  • hardware and fixings
  • alternative construction methods
  • finishing

You will learn various methods of classic to contemporary carcase and glazed door construction including door hanging, fitting hinges and cabinet lock installation.

You will also use hand tools such as planes, marking gauges, Japanese saws and chisels.

How I'll learn

You learn the basic woodworking skills and gradually build up practical knowledge and confidence through workshop practice.

At the end you will have a finished piece of furniture to include in a portfolio and have gained the knowledge, experience and confidence to attempt basic furniture making projects of your own.
