Hands-on woodworking courses for budding designer/makers and keen DIY enthusiasts.

Woodwork for beginners is an entry level course and a fantastic course to start your journey into the wonderful world of fine woodworking, taught by Rycotewood alumnus Michael Buick.

Beginning with a simple hand cut trivet (pot-rest), at the end of the course you will go home with your own hand made dovetail box with lid.

The course takes place in fully-equipped workshops in the Rycotewood Furniture Centre, and all materials are provided.

A series of workshop activities will ensure that you complete the course with finished work and practical woodwork skills.

Please note this course will not run during school holidays.

What I'll learn

You will learn:

  • precise joint cutting
  • timber selection
  • reading a simple technical drawing
  • marking out
  • cutting dovetail joints
  • finishing and oiling
  • using hand tools such as marking gauges, Japanese saws and chisels

How I'll learn

You learn the basic woodworking skills and gradually build up practical knowledge and confidence through workshop practice.

At the end you will have a finished piece of furniture to include in a portfolio and have gained the knowledge, experience and confidence to attempt basic furniture making projects of your own.
