If you are interested in the sports and exercise industry then you should look no further than this course.

You will learn essential skills and theory relating to all aspects of sports and exercise, one of the fastest growing industries in the UK, including:

  • anatomy
  • psychology
  • sports development
  • coaching
  • nutrition

Led by tutors with excellent academic and practical backgrounds you will enjoy learning more about what goes on behind the scenes of sports, different career paths for you to take and which aspect of sport and exercise science you would like to focus on in the future.

Previous students have gone onto work in sports coaching, professional sports academies, teaching and education, gym instruction and university.

Equivalent in size to three A Levels, the course comprises of 14 units, of which 10 are mandatory and 4 are externally-assessed. 

Mandatory units:

  • Skill Acquisition in Sport-Learners study the factors that contribute to a skilled performance in sport and examine how sports performers learn and develop their skills.
  • Sports Performance Analysis – Learners will study methods of performance analysis, benchmarks for performance, and practically develop and use tools for analysing performance and providing feedback.
  • Sports Injury Management – Learners study the signs and symptoms of sports injuries, application of basic treatment and rehabilitation methods, injury risk factors and injury prevention.
  • Sports Massage – Learners will study the sports massage profession, the importance of sports massage to the performer and how to conduct a consultation and assessment and carry out a sports massage.
  • Professional Development in the Sports Industry-Learners explore the knowledge and skills required for different career pathways in the sports industry. Learners will take part in, and reflect on, a personal skills audit, career action plan and practical interview assessment activities.
  • Sports Leadership-Learners study what makes a good leader, the different capacities of this role, and the leadership skills and techniques necessary when leading activities in different roles.
  • Application of Fitness Testing – This unit explains the principles of fitness testing including factors affecting the selection and administration of tests, such as ensuring the validity, reliability and suitability of tests.
  •  Practical Sports Performance-Learners study the skills, techniques, tactics and rules of selected sports through active participation in individual/team sports.
  • Coaching for Performance-Learners will develop the techniques, personal knowledge and ability to deliver coaching sessions.
  • Research Methods in Sport-Learners cover the importance of research, factors affecting the quality of research, an introduction to research and the different methods commonly used in sport-based research

Externally-assessed units:

  • Anatomy and Physiology- Learners explore how the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems function and the fundamentals of the energy systems.
  • Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Well-being-Learners explore client screening and lifestyle assessment, fitness training methods and fitness programming to support improvements in a client’s health and well-being.
  •  Development and Provision of Sport and Physical Activity-Learners study the development and provision of sport in the UK and its relationship with global sport, including understanding what is needed to write a proposal for a sports development project. (EXAM UNIT)
  • Investigating Business in Sport and the Active Leisure Industry-Learners investigate how business operates in the sport and active leisure industry and how it responds to trends and other influences to meet the needs of clients and to benefit the business.

You will also improve the broader skills vital for success in further study or employment including:

  • speaking in front of others
  • working with others
  • taking responsibility
  • managing your time

By the end of the course you will have benefited from a valuable insight into future careers open to you.

Approximately 60% of your time at college is classroom-based with an active approach to the theory subjects.

The rest of your time will be spent on practical activities in the sports hall or gym, such as fitness coaching or practical sport.

A strong emphasis of the practical sessions is placed on working and learning with others and you are regularly set tasks to complete in partnership with other students.

You also need to be able to work independently and take responsibility for your own learning.

Throughout the course you have the opportunity to demonstrate your skills by participating in community activities and schools partnerships.

You will also have ongoing tutorial support to help you achieve the qualification.

Individual learning targets are set each term and you receive regular feedback on your progress in meeting these targets.

Formal assessment is through assignments, projects, presentations and practical assessments which are set at regular intervals throughout the course. There are two externally assessed exams each year.

The functional skills in English maths or ICT is assessed by an external exam.

You need to have 4 GCSEs at grade 4 or above including maths and English, or a relevant level 2 Diploma at Merit or above
