Whether it’s supporting elite athletes to reach their full potential, or introducing sport to a young person for the first time, with a career in sports you can play an important role in leading people to a healthy lifestyle. This course covers a wide range of subjects about sport and the human body, and gets you ready for a wide range of related careers, including physiotherapy, sports centre management, personal training and more.
There are six core units as part of the Sport and Exercise Science Level 3 Extended Diploma programme. The six core subjects are:
- Anatomy and Physiology
- Psychology
- Research Methods
- Biomechanics
- Nutrition
- Sports Injuries and Massage

How you'll learn and be assessed
You will study through a mixture of theory and practical lessons. Majority of your lessons will be theory based with practice lessons used to apply content and topics to movement. This extended diploma includes work experience and functional skills tutorials.
You will be assessed continuously throughout the programme and given ongoing feedback to support you through the course. Your assessments will be written, practical and verbal, and you will be given opportunities to achieve the maximum grade available. In each year of the qualification, there are also two exams (two in the first year, two in the second year). These exams always take place in January, however there are retake exams available in May/June.
Your lessons will be based across two key sites; the excellent leisure facilities at Oxford Brookes Centre for Sport and the college’s classroom, rehabilitation suite and IT suites.
Entry requirements
You need to have 5 GCSEs at grade 5 or above including English, Science and maths, or a BTEC Level 2 Diploma, grade Merit or Distinction.
