Sport and Exercise Science (RQF): Pearson's BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma

Prepare yourself for a sports-related career or degree with the Sport and Exercise Science BTEC Extended Diploma.

This course covers a wide range of subjects about sport and the human body, and gets you ready for a wide range of related careers, including physiotherapy, sports centre management, personal training and more.

What I'll learn

There are six core units and twelve specialist units. 

The six core subjects are:

  • anatomy
  • physiology
  • psychology
  • research methods
  • research project 
  • biomechanics. 


The specialist units cover:

  • exercise
  • health and lifestyle 
  • fitness testing
  • training and fitness
  • sport and exercise
  • massage
  • sports nutrition
  • sports injuries
  • sports coaching
  • practical individual and team sports
  • applied sport and exercise psychology
  • physiology
  • work-based experience in sport

 

How I'll learn

You will study through a mixture of theory and practical lessons. This extended diploma includes work experience, functional skills tutorials and additional qualifications. Additional qualifications include Level 2 treatment and management of injuries, first aid for sport and sports massage.

There are also residential visits and day trips at an additional cost. 

 

How I'll be assessed

You will be assessed continuously throughout the programme and given ongoing feedback to support you through the course. Your assessments will be written, practical and verbal, and give you every opportunity to achieve the maximum grade available. Some of the additional qualifications are assessed through both theory and practical examinations.

Your lessons will be based across two sites; the excellent leisure facilities at Oxford Brookes Centre for Sport and the college's IT facilities.

 

Entry Requirements

You will need 5 or more GCSEs grades A*-C or 9-4 (or equivalent), including English and maths, or a BTEC Level 2 Diploma, grade Merit or Distinction, plus GCSE grade C or above or Functional Skills at Level 2 in English and maths.

Applicants will be invited to attend an interview and complete an internal assessment. All students will have their literacy and numeracy needs supported within the programme.
