This qualification will develop your photographic practice and also aims to support your progress either into employment or onto degree-level study.

This QCF qualification is designed for adult learners aged from 18 to 80+.

It is ideal for people who wish to further develop their understanding of modern, digital photographic processes and the photo-imaging industry. You'll develop your photographic practice and the work you'll complete on this course will support your progress either into employment or onto degree level study.

This qualification is endorsed by the Royal Photographic Society (RPS).

Please note: this course will run over four terms and occasional Saturdays.

What I'll learn

This practical course will help you to understand and develop the advanced skills needed to creatively control and process images to a professional standard using a range of equipment, techniques and post processing. Current versions of Adobe’s Photoshop and Lightroom Classic (industry standard software) will be available to be used in class.

The course will enable learners to extend both advanced technical and creative skills in photography. Learners will research contemporary and historical photographers working in portraiture, location and documentary fields. There will be detailed practical learning focused on the following genre: portraiture, fashion, location, products, studio and documentary. You will also develop your understanding of the legislation relevant to photographic practice, including copyright, and photographers’ rights.

This delivery consists of 3 units, 2 mandatory core units:

  • Use camera techniques to creatively control visual outcomes
  • Print and present a portfolio of photographs

And one unit chosen from the following optional units:

  • Portrait photography
  • Studio photography
  • Location photography
  • Documentary photography

How I'll learn

You will attend weekly sessions, working on several individual and group practical tasks. You will create a broad portfolio of work, some of which is submitted halfway through (for formative assessment) and again for your final assessment. There is no formal examination, but you will have homework to complete throughout the course (including two short research essays) and will use this along with your visual evidence to develop a paper-based portfolio of evidence to accompany your final images.

Studio-based teaching, lectures, visiting speakers, offsite and gallery visits, demonstrations, workshops, critiques, tutorials and independent learning through set assignment briefs and tasks.
