Video has become an essential method for communication; it's unrivalled as a medium to get stories across to the widest audience.

This course covers the processes of video production, from the initial idea through to a final product, providing an accessible introduction to digital filmmaking techniques; it's designed to offer a rapid and affordable way to acquire comprehensive video production skills.

The course is suitable for complete beginners and for people with video skills from any personal or professional background, the course is led by experienced video producers and trainers from Real Time, a locally-based NGO with an international reputation for participatory video production.

The aim is to provide all participants with a solid foundation of practical knowledge:

  • a working understanding of digital cameras
  • sound recording
  • interview techniques
  • filming on location
  • industry language

At the end of the course, you will have access to any material recorded by you and an Activate Learning certificate. You will be networking with with other filmmakers and there will be a screening of recorded rushes at the end of the day.

What I'll learn

  • Pre-production planning, including storyboarding
  • Use of digital cameras (focus, white balance, aperture, formats etc.) 
  • Sound recording and use of microphones 
  • Framing, types of shots, camera movements, cutaways and other techniques and tips 
  • Filming on location 
  • The principles of lighting, both natural and artificial 
  • Filming to edit 
  • Legal issues, permissions and copyrights


How I'll learn

The course is hands-on from the start, it will provide participants with the transferrable skills and confidence to use a wide range of equipment, and focus on the underlying principles of video production, which remain constant despite changes in technology and formats.


Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry rquirements for this course.

All equipment is provided but if you wish to take home content, you will need your own USB memory stick.
