Colour in film is essential for conveying a specific mood and/or aesthetic of a project, both from the creator’s perspective and to reflect on the atmosphere set by the story.

Learners will be studying what makes ‘colour science’ such a knowledgeable and employable skill when actioned correctly. A large focus will be based on Adobe Premiere Pro, which existing learners will pick up from the ‘Introduction to Video Editing’, to access its colour correction facilities. You will also pick up on how to use external programmes to fix a colour grade after the main edit has been completed.

Learners can expect to finish this short course with a piece of media that they can use on their showreels or just to show at their own leisure and the ability to create content which touches on professionally released content from the film and television industry.

For learners who would like to apply themselves to grading a specific film scene, we can recommend you to apply for the ‘Advanced Video Editing’ short course which also features colour correction for video editing in it’s own right.

Activate Learning offer a range of Media Learning for Leisure courses throughout the year

What I'll learn

Introduction into colour correction and grading as well as developing some already existing skillsets picked up from prior media experiences.

Working with industry grade colour correcting software, Davinci Resolve, a software also heavily used in the industry within the post-production process.

Continuing skills learnt in Adobe Premiere Pro, especially using RGB colour correction to really define the work that’s expected of you.

Experience working with even more advanced editing techniques, such as dramatic scene changes which will effect your environments for each shot on screen. You will also learn the difference between automatic and hand-crafted colour correction.

How I'll learn

You will learn through a variety of methods, including:

  • formal instruction
  • individual tuition
  • practical demonstration
  • practical experience

Entry Requirements

Practice materials will be continued to be provided for this short course.

It’s recommended to bring in an external hard drive or portable USB memory device to store a backup of your practical work should anything go wrong. This will also come handy when saving your work if you wish to take it home afterwards.

For hygiene reasons we recommend that all students bring in their own headphones (not earphones) to use when accessing the digital resources in the classroom.
