Introduction to Sprung Upholstery

Print Page

This introduction to sprung upholstery is for beginners (and those who have completed the upholstered stool making workshop at Rycotewood) and will teach the traditional craft techniques to build a sprung, hand-stitched and stuffed dining chair.

We are delighted to be able to re-run this successful, 10 week Introduction to Traditional Upholstery course. This introduction to upholstery is for absolute beginners and will teach traditional craft techniques.

What I'll learn

You will learn how to build a hand-stitched and stuffed stool. A frame will be supplied by City of Oxford College. You will use age old methods of construction and classic materials such as coir and animal hair will be used to upholster the stool.
If you catch the bug and find that you would like to learn more then you will be able to book onto the longer and more comprehensive creative, traditional upholstery course beginning in Jan 2018 which will run 1 day a week, over the course of a year.

How I'll learn

Course teaching will take place in our brand new upholstery workshop in small groups led by
a professional, award winning upholsterer.

How I'll be assessed

There are no formal assessments on this course.

Entry Requirements

You must supply your own chair (advice can be given). Age old methods of
construction and classic materials such as coir and animal hair will be used in the
upholstery.

All materials are included in the price (except for top fabric) and no tools are
required, as they will be provided for use during the lessons. You will, however, have the
opportunity to buy tools through the college if you would like to continue working on your
project at home.
