    Engineering

Follow our engineering pathway and you will get an excellent grounding in mechanical, electrical and electronic engineering to enable you to choose the career that’s right for you. If you like finding solutions to technical challenges, engineering could be your future. Skilled engineers are in demand; so much so that there is a major drive, nationally and locally, to encourage young people into the profession.

As part of your studies, you will have the opportunity to take part in employer-led, work-based projects, based on real-life scenarios, providing invaluable experience to supplement your studies. Our Level 3 students have recently benefitted from curriculum sponsorship from the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME), including a work-based project, guest lecturing and regional competitions.

This programme will enable you to develop your knowledge of engineering materials, design and processes, graphical communication including CAD, and electrical and electronic principles. This is an advanced-level course which gives you broad knowledge so you can then specialise and progress to a technical area of your choice.

You will explore the scientific principles of engineering and develop the analytical and problem solving skills that are needed within an engineering environment.

You will study 18 modules over the two years, and in addition you will study functional skills in English, maths or ICT.

Students will study the different sectors in engineering and their underlying processes systems and structures, and develop a range of skills and techniques including personal skills and attributes to help you progress successfully.

Learning activities include lectures, workshops and practical sessions.

A strong emphasis is placed on working and learning with others.

You are regularly set tasks to complete in partnership with other students.

You also need to be able to work independently and take responsibility for your own learning.

Individual learning targets are set each term and you receive regular feedback on your progress in meeting these targets.

Formal assessment is through assignments, projects, presentations and practical assessments, which are set at regular intervals throughout the course. The functional skills in English, maths or ICT are assessed by an external exam.

You need to have 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above including Maths and English Language or a relevant level 2 Certificate with a merit grade or above.
