This course has been developed by the maintenance, manufacturing, electronic and general engineering sectors to give full time learners the opportunity to enter employment or to progress to higher level engineering qualifications.

The course will enable you to develop your knowledge of engineering materials, design and processes, graphical communication including CAD, and electrical and electronic principles.

You will study core units covering engineering working practices, using engineering information, maths for technicians, and electrical and mechanical science for engineering purposes. 

What I'll learn

You will study the following modules over the year: 

  • Health and safety
  • Interpreting and using engineering information
  • Maths for engineering technicians
  • Applied electrical and mechanical science
  • Selecting engineering materials
  • Engineering assembly methods and techniques
  • CAD operation
  • Maintenance of mechanical systems
  • Operation and maintenance of electrical systems. 

In addition, you will have the opportunity to study GCSE English and maths if you do not currently have a grade 4 (C) in those subjects. 

Individual learning targets are set each term. You will receive regular feedback on your progress in meeting these targets.



How I'll learn

Learning activities include lectures, workshops and practical sessions. A strong emphasis is placed on working and learning with others and you are regularly set tasks to complete in partnership with other students. You also need to be able to work independently and take responsibility for your own learning.


How I'll be assessed

Formal assessment is through assignments, projects, presentations and practical assessments, which are set at regular intervals throughout the course. The functional skills in English, maths or ICT are assessed by an external exam.


Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs grade D (3) or above including English and maths and/or a completed Level 1 award, GCSEs to include English and Maths at Grade D (3) or above, or Level 1 Functional Skills qualifications. You must also demonstrate the willingness to study for an additional qualification in English and/or Maths.

Applicants will be invited to attend an interview and complete an internal assessment. All students will have their literacy and numeracy needs supported within the programme.
