Exploring the Care Sector Level 1

You will learn the fundamentals of caring across all areas of the Health and Social Care industry and get the chance to look at the many roles within care environments.

It develops your basic skills in childcare education and play-work and gives you direct experience of working in an early years setting.

Areas studied include:

  • understand the principles and values in health and social care (adults and children and young people), early years and childcare
  • understand the range of service provision and roles within health and social care (adults and children and young people), early years and childcare
  • introduction to communication in health and social care (adults and children and young people), early years and childcare
  • awareness of protection and safeguarding in health and social care (adults and children and young people), early years and childcare

In addition to traditional teaching, you will also learn practical skills within the Care Suite and gain further experience in a care placement. This will support you to progress within a preferred pathway.

You will develop your basic skills in childcare, education and play work and gain direct experience of working in an early years setting.

The qualification will be pass or refer and all the assessment criteria for the chosen units must be achieved in order to obtain a pass. The course has approximately 13 hours teacher contact time per week – spread over 3 days.

Assessment is through assignment work. You learn through classroom-based activities practical workshops and a 15-day supervised practical work placement in a childcare setting in the final term.

The course also gives you the opportunity to improve your literacy numeracy and ICT skills.

You need to have 4 GCSEs at grade 2 or above including English and Maths
