Illustration Techniques

Print Page

Develop your illustration portfolio and build your confidence in responding creatively and effectively to illustration briefs using a wide range of media.

This course helps you to improve your techniques and confidence in being innovative in your approach.

This six-week course is a fantastic creative opportunity giving you an insight on techniques used to create illustrations.

You will be given exercises and projects that provide an understanding of how to use materials and techniques.

You will look at examples of illustrators within different fields of illustration to inspire you and develop an understanding of how they use their materials and techniques.

You can progress to the next Illustration course or Book Illustration to begin to develop an illustration portfolio, or investigate the other Art and Printmaking courses at Reading College.

What I'll learn

You will gain an understanding of how illustrators make work, and an overview of some of their techniques.

You will experiment with a range of methods that you can use in illustration projects, and begin to plan your own project.

How I'll learn

The learning atmosphere will be one of exploration and development with the encouragement of a practicing illustrator alongside your peers.

You will be introduced to a range of different materials and techniques provided on the course and encouraged to experiment with different ways of working.

Through experimenting with hand-made processes (not digital) including black and white, coloured media and mixed media, you will explore these techniques.

The group will be taught in an informative and supportive atmosphere, and you will be encouraged to share your work with others and discuss your findings.

Entry Requirements

Basic materials will be provided, such as pencils, paper, inks, paints and brushes but you should bring a sketch book.

Those with more experience are welcome to bring your own items if you have preferences, such as good quality brushes, materials etc.

You do not need an idea for an illustration project; however you might like to develop one!
