Join the upcycling revolution and breathe new life into your chair!

This is an introduction to furniture painting and up-cycling for chairs.

Each week, there will be a three hour session and the course runs for three weeks.

You will learn how to give pre-loved chairs a new lease on life and recover the seat pad with your own printed and designed fabric.

No prior experience is necessary.

At the end of this course, you will have created a newly-designed chair. You will also gain an enhanced knowledge and understanding of how the process of silk screen printing works and how several colours and patterns can be added or developed.

The process is water based and non-toxic.

What I'll learn

You will learn:

  • How to upcycle and paint a chair, including adding finishing touches
  • How to experiment with designing stencils and create imagery ready for screen printing
  • The process of transferring your stencil design to screen
  • Apply printing ink to several different fabrics and block out areas of the screen for applying more than one image or colour
  • How to recover a seat pad for a chair

How I'll learn

Teaching methods include:

  • Formal instruction
  • Discussion
  • Individual tuition
  • Practical demonstration
  • Practical experience

Furthermore, you will get the opportunity to develop your skills according to your own specific needs.

Entry Requirements

Basic materials (paintbrushes, calico) for this course will be provided. However it would be best to bring in your preferred flat upholstery fabric for your final finish (no more than a meter).

You will need:

  • an apron
  • a chair with a removable seat pad (please contact the tutor if you need help or advice with this. However, it will not be needed for the first session)
  • you may also need a new pad for the seat which can be discussed with your tutor
  • bring in images for inspiration!

If you are considering repainting your chair, please bring in Annie Sloane or French Chic Furniture paint in the colours of your choice.
