Our career pathways show you a typical route through the various stages of learning, what you will learn along the way and the careers these programmes could lead onto.

What I'll learn

On this course you cover six mandatory units:

  • an introduction to working with children
  • the developing child
  • safe healthy and nurturing environments for children
  • children and play
  • communication and professional skills
  • the practitioner in the workplace (practical unit)

The teaching team select an optional unit too and you can gain qualifications in first aid and functional skills.

How I'll learn

Combine theoretical study with practical experience as you prepare for a career in childcare. This certificate helps you to gain knowledge through observational studies, practical work with children and a range of classroom-based activities which combine theoretical and practical training.

Combining days at college with placement days in care settings, you will be encouraged to link the theory of care for children and young people with your developing practice.

English and maths are also integral as these skills are essential for your employability.

How I'll be assessed

Assessment is via observation and examination.

Entry Requirements

You will need four GCSEs grade 3 (D) or above including English Language and Maths. A Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) check will also be required.
