We welcome ceramics and pottery enthusiasts of all abilities to our Raku Pottery Summer Holiday Week for adults!

Working with the elements of fire, water, and earth, you’ll explore the pottery firing technique known as ‘Raku’.

Raku is the Japanese tradition of rapid glaze firing pottery which was developed in the late 16th century. In this course, you will learn how to make, and then glaze and fire your own pot, creating stunning results.

Raku is a low-firing technique connected to a rich cultural and spiritual heritage where there is still much to be discovered, experienced and shared.

By the end of the course, you will have gained a strong insight into the process of Raku Firing and you'll be able to take your beautiful Raku pot home with you.

The course runs on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 10am–4pm with a one-hour lunch break.

Please be prepared to cover up in old clothes, a coat and sensible footwear.

Basic materials will be included.

You can progress your ceramic skills when joining one of our other ceramics courses we are offering. Please search our courses online!

What I'll learn

You will learn about Reduction and Oxidation kilns. The thermal shock properties of clay, and the process as a whole, make for a highly experimental process with dramatic and unpredictable results!

Monday and Tuesday will be spent making and decorating pots with slips/ textures/ burnishing at a level to suit you.

Thursday, you will start by glazing your pots. Friday we will then proceed outdoors to fire the pots using the Raku process. The stunning Raku effects will be revealed as you wait for the pots to cool and clean them up. No two pots are exactly alike!

How I'll learn

You will learn through a variety of methods, including:

  • formal instruction
  • individual tuition
  • practical demonstration
  • practical experience
