Working with the elements of fire, water and earth you’ll explore the Japanese pottery firing technique known as ‘Raku’.
Raku is the Japanese tradition of rapid glaze firing pottery which was developed in the late 16th century. In this two-day course, you will learn how to make, and then glaze and fire your own pot, creating stunning results.
Raku is a low-firing technique connected to a rich cultural and spiritual heritage where there is still much to be discovered, experienced and shared.
Basic materials will be included.
At the end of the course, you will have gained a strong insight into the process of Raku Firing and you’ll take your beautiful raku pot home with you.
You could also join our throwing workshop or our weekly ceramic classes!
What I'll learn
You will learn about Reduction and Oxidation kilns. The thermal shock properties of clay and the process as a whole make for a highly experimental process with dramatic and unpredictable results!
The first workshop morning is spent making pots at a level to suit you. The pots will be bisque fired ready for the next session.
On the second day, you will start by glazing pots using a variety of colourful glazes. We will then proceed outdoors to fire the pots using the Raku process. The stunning raku effects will be revealed as you wait for the pots to cool and clean them up. No two pots are exactly alike!
