Ceramics/Pottery: Introduction to Glaze Making

This fun course is designed for beginners who want to learn how to create a range of glazes for their pottery/ceramics projects.

You will cover the basics of glaze chemistry and basic application methods. You'll then get to experiment with using multiple glazes, oxide effects and fault diagnosis.

You will also make up a base glaze and run glaze tests using oxides, stains and natural substances. 

If you want to keep practising, you can return for another class.

What I'll learn

You will learn how to make best use of glazes available to you, with the time to experiment with different effects.

You will also learn how to read a glaze recipe, mix up a glaze, experiment with colour additions, alongside health and safety considerations. 

 

How I'll learn

Furthermore, you will get the opportunity to develop your skills according to your own specific needs.

 

Entry Requirements

Some experience or understanding of glazing would be useful but not necessary.

The cost is inclusive of tuition, clay, glazes, and kiln space. Specialist materials and tools will be given out by the tutor if necessary.

You will need to bring:

  • a sketchbook and something to write with
  • a towel
  • an apron/wear old clothes that you don't mind getting messy
  • enthusiasm for the subject and a willingness to learn!

You may wish to bring handcream and a dust mask. If you have sensitive skin, you may also wish to bring a pair of washing-up gloves.

You must wear flat shoes as this is a safety requirement. Working with clay can get very messy!
