Explore a range of techniques to create sculptures from ceramic materials!

Explore and experiment with a range of ceramic techniques specifically for sculpture such as:

  • slip casting
  • slab building
  • coiling
  • press moulding
  • glazing

This course is suitable for people of all levels of experience who have an interest in sculpture. We offer a broad range of ceramics courses at City of Oxford College to support your creative progression. You can discuss the various avenues for progression from this course with your tutor.

Please note: This course runs during term time only.

What I'll learn

The course offers a formal introduction to basic techniques, materials and processes of sculpting with clay.

These could include:

  • coiling
  • press moulding
  • slab building
  • carving from clay
  • beginner's level slip casting 
  • use of different types of clay
  • the application of colour

You will develop spatial, proportional and visual awareness. This can include the exploration of methods to create compositions, accurate observation and evaluation of your work, drawing to test ideas for your sculpture in its early stages, measuring techniques, the construction of simple maquettes and the possibilities of the application of colour.

You will make a range of ceramic forms to take to the first firing stage.

Please note: Only relatively small pieces of clay sculptures are appropriate for this course.

Entry Requirements

No previous experience needed but eagerness to learn and explore recommended!

Materials are included and our professionally equipped ceramic workshop will provide you with the right environment to support you on your creative journey.

Please bring an apron and wear appropriate shoes.
