With the Carpentry and Joinery (Site Carpentry) Level 2 study programme you can extend the skills you acquired at Level 1 so you can progress towards becoming a joiner in the construction industry.

On this programme you will learn the attributes, values, skills and attitudes for working in the construction industry, with a specialist focus on carpentry and joinery (site carpentry). The course is designed to increase your employability and prepare you for progression into an apprenticeship. The course blends practical workshop skills and activities with underpinning knowledge that is delivered in the classroom.

Our construction students also get the opportunity to showcase their skills in regional and national competitions, taking on students and apprentices from around the country. What’s more, our students get to work on employer led projects which reflect the real life challenges construction companies face every day.

The main areas covered on the Site Carpentry Level 2 study programme are:

  • health, safety and welfare in construction
  • principles of building construction
  • information and communication
  • first fix flooring and roofing
  • first fix frames, partitions and stairs
  • second fixing operations
  • carpentry maintenance
  • setting up and operating a circular saw

For those students who are not exempt there is a requirement to complete Functional Skills qualifications alongside mainstream study.

This is a practical and theoretically based course using a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, lectures and presentations. You will work on your own, in pairs and small groups practicing skills and techniques within a realistic working environment.

This course prepares you for employment as a work-based learner (apprentice) in the construction industry or further full-time study in carpentry/construction. You will learn in our newly-built carpentry and construction centre, which benefits from industry-standard facilities.

Site carpentry practical coursework will be marked through set practical tasks. Underpinning knowledge is assessed via internally-set test papers and on line exams.

You will need 4 GCSEs at grades 3 or above including English language and maths AND an achievement on a relevant Level 1 course.
