This course allows students to learn and develop skills in providing a wide range of professional beauty treatments.

Every year, we successfully train many students in becoming fully-qualified beauty therapists. By choosing a career in this industry, you will have the opportunity to combine creativity with customer care; helping people to look and feel great. Beauticians are specialists in discussing and understanding client requirements, analysing and advising on skincare and beauty regimes, giving treatments, and applying cosmetics.

On this Level 2 course you will be supported by expert beauty tutors in gaining professional, hands-on training experience with real clients. You will also develop confidence and customer service skills within an industry-standard salon.

We will help you develop the skills you need to work in the beauty therapy industry, including:

  • communication
  • problem solving
  • professional standards
  • client consultation
  • time management
  • customer care
  • creativity

What I'll learn

Topics covered include:

  • facial and skin care
  • cosmetic make-up
  • manicure
  • waxing
  • pedicure
  • lash and brow treatments
  • health and safety standards
  • anatomy and physiology
  • sales skills
  • customer service and conversational techniques

GCSE maths can be taken alongside the course if you do not achieve grade 4 or above in your GCSE’s prior to the course. GCSE English language grade 4 or above must be achieved prior to the course.

You will learn various aspects of skin care and make-up treatments, methods of waxing and basic hair removal and how to give luxury manicures and pedicures. Your study will also look at employment standards and you will develop your communication skills for when dealing with clients.

You will learn about stock control, selling and health and safety so you are aware of safe working practices and salon practices. You will have the opportunity to work in the college salons, supporting other students and dealing with clients in a real commercial environment.

How I'll learn

You'll learn through discussions, expert demonstrations by experienced beauty practitioners and practical activities in our industry-standard facilities.

We are open to the public and are run like a professional salon, so you'll have the opportunity to practice your professional beauty treatments on customers, whilst gaining work experience in the industry.

Your course will also involve a one-week work placement and will be involved in organising and taking part in several enrichment activities that are linked to producing a portfolio of your work.

This course requires a large amount of self-directed study and you will need to ensure that you are working for a minimum of 3 hours per week self-study. You will have access to City and Guilds Smartscreen which has resources and handouts to able you to revise and look over your routines.

How I'll be assessed

You will be assessed each time you enter the salon on your professional standards to ensure you are meeting the standards of industry.

The course is divided into three main forms of assessments:

  • a two and a half-hour theory paper
  • a six–seven hour practical day
  • a three-hour written task

All of these elements are graded Pass, Merit or Distinction and an overall outcome for each unit will give you a final grade at the end of the year based on exam results and quality of work and national average.

A minimum of 95% attendance is required on the programme to ensure you are not missing essential information.

Entry Requirements

A college, navy-coloured uniform and Level 2 kit is essential to purchase prior to starting the course. Information will be given prior to enrolment.
