Print Page

You will be guided through the steps you need to create realistic charcoal portraits from photographs that capture likeness and character.

You will be guided through the steps you need to create realistic charcoal portraits from photographs that capture likeness and character.

Charcoal is a fabulous medium to draw with as it can be very expressive and also subtle. If you wish to tackle painting portraits then charcoal is a very helpful introduction.

What I'll learn

You will learn to ‘see’ the light and shade in the face and how to use charcoal to describe it. You will also be shown how to draw the key elements in the face and how to position them accurately to capture a likeness.

Images and materials will be provided. If you want to work from your own photographs please ensure that they are clear and have good tonal contrast.

You might like to bring pastel fixative or extra firm hairspray to ‘fix’ your drawings to prevent smudging as you take them home.
