Painting and Drawing for beginners

Print Page

This five week course is a mixed ability class welcoming both beginners and those with more experience.

We will explore tone, texture and composition whilst familiarising ourselves with the tools of the trade; paper, pencils, charcoal and paint. We will look at traditional approaches to subject matter practicing perspective, colour mixing and measuring. Alongside this there will be sessions exploring experimental approaches to mark making and paint application

Our career pathways show you a typical route through the various stages of learning, what you will learn along the way and the careers these programmes could lead onto.

What I'll learn

These classes will provide you with a toolkit of techniques that will help you approach a wide variety of subject matters, so you can get creative whenever you feel inspiration strike.

You will also be encouraged to establish a creative habit outside of classes using your sketchbook. As the classes progress you will begin to look at the work of other artists whilst exploring your own style and honing your personal approach to different subjects.

How I'll learn

You will experiment with different media, including charcoal, graphite and acrylic paint. You will also practice tonal studies, as well as working in colour both in your sketchbooks and on paper.

You will approach landscapes using a limited palette to help with your colour mixing, alongside exploring texture using mixed media techniques.

How I'll be assessed

This is a learning for leisure course. There are no formal assessments.
