Hand-made Illustration Techniques (not digital)

Print Page

This five-week course is a creative exploration of techniques used to make illustrations.

Each week you will be given demonstrations and instruction in the use and application of different techniques and materials which you can then test and practice in your own style or illustration project.

This course runs on five consecutive Saturday mornings from 10am–12:30pm.

What I'll learn

The course will cover colour and black and white techniques in wet and dry media, and some printmaking techniques that can be applied at home or in your own studio.

Every five-week course covers a different range of techniques from the previous course to enable progression.

You will gain an understanding of how to create illustration work. You will be able to explore your own style and practice with a range of methods that you can use in other illustration projects.

You can progress to the next Illustration course to begin to develop an illustration portfolio, or continue with an illustrated book concept of your own.

How I'll learn

The group will be taught in an informative and supportive studio atmosphere, where you will be encouraged to share your findings and discoveries with others and discuss their application amongst the group. You should bring in examples of illustration techniques that you admire in week 1.

You will learn how to use different materials, tools and techniques and be introduced to a range of different ways of working with them. Through experimenting with hand-made processes (not digital) you will explore the materials and processes in relation to your own illustrative style.

How I'll be assessed

There are no formal assessments for this course.

Entry Requirements

Most basic materials will be provided, such as pencils, paper, inks, paints and brushes but you should bring a sketch book, as well as a 2B pencil, an eraser and your own cutting equipment for accuracy.

Those with more experience are welcome to bring your own items if you have preferences, such as good quality brushes, materials etc.

You do not need an idea for an illustration project or have done any illustration beforehand.
