If you want to realise your creative potential in one or more craft areas, or you want to get started in the art and design sector with introductory skills and knowledge, the Level 1 Diploma in Art, Design and Media is the right place to begin.
In the Art, Design and Media Level 1 Diploma, you will learn 2D and 3D processes using a variety of art, design and craft media, so you can make your design drawings come to life.

What I'll learn
You will develop introductory Art and Design skills and, upon successful completion, will gain a formal qualification: the UAL Level 1 Award and Diploma in Art, Design and Media.
You will learn 2D and 3D processes using a variety of art, design and craft media, so you can make your design drawings come to life.
You will study a number of topics, including:

The ideal next step is our Level 2 Art and Design programme. After that, you could progress to Level 3.
How I'll learn
This is a very hands-on course. You will develop your introductory art and design skills and, on successful completion, you will gain a qualification: the Level 1 Diploma in Art, Design and Media. Progression is available to the Level 2 Diploma in Art and Design.
Visits are part of this course and carry an additional cost.
How I'll be assessed
Your work will be assessed internally and externally accessed and verified through students’ portfolios of evidence against the unit outcomes and assessment criteria, and are subject to UAL Awarding Body’s external quality assurance.
You develop introductory art and design skills and, on successful completion, you gain a formal qualification: the Level 1 Diploma in Art, Design and Media.
You will receive individual feedback and discussion about your work during each session. Assessment of your progress is ongoing and continuous as you proceed through the course and complete each of the units required. You will be encouraged to complete set tasks and develop your own personal style as your confidence in your selected discipline develops.
You will need 4 GCSE's at grade E or equivalent, including English, Maths, an Art related subject and one other subject.
You will need a basic level of literacy and numeracy to apply for this course.
You will also need a commitment to work towards improving your English and maths skills. Both Functional skills and GCSE re-sits are offered.
Before you start this course, you will need to attend an interview. During this interview you can expect to discuss:
- Portfolio containing artwork from school (sketchbooks)
- Drawings and paintings from observation (including both black and white and colour)
- 3D work (photos of these are acceptable)
- Digital work (printed or saved on a memory stick)
- Work completed outside of school/ college e.g. photographs, drawings, paintings
- Artwork fully analysed and/ or a written study of a piece of artwork.
