These courses are suitable for anyone that wants to enhance their skills and knowledge.

This Painting and Drawing Mixed Ability course is designed to explore and investigate various drawing and painting techniques and approaches, through hands on practice guided by our expert tutor.

In a relaxed and informative atmosphere, you will be given the time and space to develop your practice which will enable you to progress within the wide and wonderful world of drawing and painting.

After developing your drawing skills using a variety of mediums, you will be introduced to a range of painting styles starting by working from observation. These will include experimenting with watercolour and various acrylic techniques to build up your compositions with textures and layers, such as ‘drybrush’, ‘stippling’ and ‘washbrush’.

You will be supported through demonstration and instruction by an experienced tutor in a relaxed and friendly environment.

There may be minimal additional costs for materials and optional visits to a relevant exhibitions.

Activate Learning offer a range of Painting and Drawing courses and workshops throughout the year. Search our courses or get in touch for details!

What I'll learn

You will be introduced to different techniques to drawing and painting by both looking and thinking; from observational studies through to more experimental and playful approaches where you will have the opportunity to explore, develop and investigate your own responses to exercises that will be designed by your tutor, alongside guided tuition.

A friendly atmosphere will allow you to share your ideas and progress with your fellow students through group discussions.

All areas of art could be explored subject to theme and ability.

We can help you with some of the following:

  • Improve colour mixing skills and the use of colour
  • Develop understanding and use of linear and aerial perspective
  • Study composition, line, tone and texture
  • Topics covered may include still life, figures, animals, plants and landscape

How I'll learn

You will learn various techniques through practice, in a non-competitive environment.

You will also be able to think about and question the broad role that drawing and painting plays today in art practice. You will be introduced to a wide range of artists, throughout the ages, where drawing is an important part of their practice.

You will walk away with confidence to pursue your work on your own terms, through the skills and techniques you will learn on the course; and to develop a critical and engaging eye not only of your own work but that of your peers.

Study is student led, so tell us how you like to learn and we'll work to accomodate your needs.

Methods of study will include:

  • Working from direct observation and photographic starting points
  • Working from a personal-sketchbook
  • Discuss and evaluate your own work and that of others to improve skills and gain inspiration

Some ‘homework’ might be set but should be seen as fun, informative and relevant to your course.
