Print Page

Our Access to HE: Childcare Level 3 Diploma course is aimed at those who wish to pursue a career in childcare but have little or no experience or relevant qualifications.

Access to Higher Education programmes are designed to prepare students aged 19+ for a Foundation Degree programme. This programme is designed for people who want to return to study after time out of education, building academic and personal confidence and developing the skills needed for real success on a degree-level course.

Upon successful completion you will be awarded a diploma that will gain you entry to degree level study at a choice of most UK universities.

What I'll learn

On the Access to HE (Childcare Professions) programme, you will study a range of topics, including:

  • Study skills for higher education
  • Practical childcare skills
  • Careers in childcare
  • Children’s development (from 0 to 12 years)
  • Safeguarding children
  • Working in partnership
  • Reflective practice.

How I'll learn

You will learn through a variety of lectures seminars workshops and tutorials. Credits are gained for a variety of tasks such as quizzes, case studies, essays, reports, presentations and timed assessments. Assessments are a mixture of essays, structured questions, presentations and examinations.

Vocational practice will be an important, mandatory part of the course. It will be explicitly linked to learning outcomes and summative assessment in the research project module.

How I'll be assessed

To gain an access diploma you must achieve 60 credits. 45 of them must be at Level 3. An Access to higher education programme takes one year to complete.

You can enrol on GCSE English and/ or maths as part of your Access to HE programme. If English is your second language and the GCSE is not an appropriate route, you will need to work towards achieving the required IELTS standard for your chosen university course.

Entry Requirements

Students must be aged 19 or over. There are no formal entry requirements, but you do need to attend an initial assessment (tests on numeracy, literacy and a written discussion on a given topic). This ensures the programme is at the most appropriate level for you, and it helps us to identify any support needs you may have, so we can put study support into place.

You may be advised to study maths and/ or English at GCSE before being considered for an Access to HE course or to study for these qualifications alongside your diploma.
