My favourite part about working at Activate Learning is working with the wider team. We all have similar goals and enthusiasms; we all like working with students to help them achieve their goals. We all work together across different departments to make sure that the students have the best possible experience while they are here.
I was at college for three years as a business student. College fit more with my way of learning, as opposed to the school environment, and it was a time in my life where I really developed as a person. I think it’s great that young people get that opportunity to pursue what’s interesting to them in a new way. Obviously, some students here have had a great time at school and have come here to continue their learning to a high standard, whereas others haven’t enjoyed their time at school so much, but now they get to join here with a clean slate; they are studying a subject that is more interesting to them and learning in a more hands on way. It’s really inspiring to see the progress some students have made, and they really come out of their shells here.
What I enjoy most about my role is working with my team to help young people get the most out of their education. We’ve always had a real unity here. We all communicate well and support each with the same common goal. It’s a really nice environment to work in.
Since being here, what has inspired me the most is the investment in my own development that I have received from Activate Learning. I came into this job with not a lot of experience, but the training has been ongoing since I started and it’s great to get that under your belt. I also work with people who are lot more experienced than myself, which is great, but the opposite of that is also true: I work with a lot of students on work placement, who I work with very closely. This gives me the opportunity to demonstrate what I’ve learned, get feedback from others and better understand my own interpretation of my role. It’s really satisfying to see my own development.
We are given lots of opportunities for continued professional development here. Every staff member has some mandatory training, but we are also able to take courses such as Advanced Safeguarding training, which means we can give each student the best possible experience we can while they’re here.
