Applied Learning Foundation

The Applied Learning Foundation (ALF) is at the heart of curriculum innovation, quality and professional training and development across Activate Learning.

The Applied Learning Foundation (ALF) is at the heart of curriculum innovation, quality and professional training and development across Activate Learning.

Our Applied Learning Foundation (ALF) champions curriculum innovation, quality and professional training and development in Activate Learning.

We redesign our curriculum innovatively, through groundbreaking teaching and learning projects. This helps create a curriculum that gives equal importance to the development of attributes and qualifications. There is a  comprehensive framework, a toolkit, a common language and a unified approach to the development of attributes. ALF support practitioners to develop the skills necessary to plan, deliver and assess attributes across the curriculum.

Teacher training opportunities

ALF offers a full range of teacher training opportunities for teaching staff, from our bespoke Level 3 Award in Education and Training to the PGCE, validated by Oxford Brookes University.

This year, we are launching a teaching apprenticeship programme across many subject areas. In September 2019 we will be starting the Foundation Degree in Educational Practice, aimed at primary school teaching assistants who want to gain qualified teacher status.

Our award-winning Pass it on scheme

We support continuing professional development for teachers through our ‘Pass it on’ scheme. This allows staff to share their knowledge and develop new skills through:

  • Teach Meets and masterclasses
  • Collaborative workshops
  • Teaching and Learning Fairs

Supporting new teaching staff

Our Teacher essentials and Dual professionals ensure that new colleagues will feel supported when they arrive in their new roles.

Research and innovation

Our Academies of English and maths oversee strategic planning and innovation in these two core areas of learning.

We conduct our own research projects and encourage our colleagues within the organisation to do the same.  If you want to undertake research in Activate Learning, please submit a request form.

Our Professional exchange network for teachers in the Thames Valley area meets regularly throughout the year. The network is part of Developtogether.tv, funded by the Education and Training Foundation and in partnership with Creative Education. This is an ideal way yo share ideas and teaching resources and try out new teaching approaches.

We are also strategic partners with Train Visual, who developed the How2 range of training resources for teachers, particularly useful in English and maths teaching.
